How Does Laparoscopic Surgery Work?

In laparoscopic surgery, a variety of instruments are utilized to facilitate the procedure, with the laparoscope playing a central role. This slender device features a miniature camera and light at its tip, allowing for precise visualization of the internal body structures. The surgical process commences with the surgeon making small incisions, typically only a few millimeters in length. Through these incisions, the laparoscope and other necessary instruments are inserted. The camera transmits real-time video footage of the internal body to a monitor outside the patient, enabling the surgeon to navigate and perform the surgery with precision.

Furthermore, carbon dioxide (CO2) is commonly employed in laparoscopic surgery to inflate the abdomen and create space within the abdominal cavity. This inflation is achieved by introducing CO2 gas through one of the incisions. But why is carbon dioxide used in laparoscopic surgery? The gas serves two primary purposes: providing a clear visual field for the surgeon by pushing away surrounding organs and tissues, and creating ample room for maneuvering instruments during the procedure. Once the surgery is complete, the surgeon releases the gas and proceeds to close the incisions with stitches, ensuring proper wound healing.
